The DAY function

The DAY function is a date and time function which extracts the day of the month from a standard format date within Excel.

This is the format of the DAY function:

=DAY(DATE VALUE)

Here is an example of the DAY function:

=DAY(45054) = 8

DAY functioning extracting the calendar day value of the date cell

This function is valuable when needing to isolate monthly or periodic information. This could include things like bills or recurring payments set to specific dates, or isolating which days of the month result in the most traffic for a business.

An example of a functional implementation of this would be tracking number of support tickets agents at a 24/7 call center resolved throughout a year. These agents are scheduled to work based on the day of the month, and have a rotations which affords them a consistent schedule. This information will be used to track which agents/days have the most traffic and allocate resources effectively.

ex: column C holds the ticket date information, and the first row of data begins on row 3

=DAY(C3) = 1
