Part 1: The Essentials

Here are the top 10 shortcuts everyone needs to know when learning about Excel!

While we are primarily focusing on Excel, these shortcuts are standard across most applications including the Microsoft suite. (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote)

1. Copying information

• Adds information to the clipboard where it can then be pasted to another location in the file, or into a different application completely

CTL + C

2. Cutting information

• Adds information to the clipboard while also removing it from its current location. It can then be pasted to another location in the file, or into a different application completely

CTL + X

3. Pasting information

• Takes information from the clipboard and inserts it into whatever region of cells you have selected

CTL + V

4. Opening a new file

• Opens a blank Excel file and sets it as the active window

CTL + N

5. Saving a file

• Saves your progress within the active file, if the file has not yet been saved and the shortcut is used it will act in the same way “save as” would

CTL + S

6. Closing a file

• Exits the current active file and will prompt users to save the file if they have any pending changes

CTL + W

7. Printing a file

• Opens the print dialogue menu

CTL + P

8. Bold text / selected cells

• Adds the bold text formatting to all selected text or cells

CTL + B

9. Underline text / selected cells

• Adds the underlined text formatting to all selected text or cells

CTL + U

10. Italicize text / selected cells

• Adds the italics text formatting to all selected text or cells

CTL + I
